SPANKED BY SPURGEON

"I believe that, at this present time, we are in great danger of being burdened with a crowd of so-called converts who do not really know anything as it ought to be known. They attended a revival meeting, were much excited, and thought they were converted; but just ask them to explain to you the simplest truths of the gospel, and you will soon discover how little they know. Could they explain the three R's, ruin, redemption, and regeneration Do they know what the ruin is? Do they know what the remedy for that ruin is? Do they understand at all what it means to be born again? Do they comprehend what the new nature is, or what "justification by faith" means. Perhaps someone says, "They do not comprehend your theological terms." I do not mind whether they know the meaning of the terms that are familiar to many of us; but do they know the truths themselves? There is a certain degree of Christian knowledge which is absolutely necessary to salvation."

although i can sympathize with his sentiment even now a hundred years later or so, i do believe that there is something so simple about the gospel, or rather made simple by the Grace of God persuing every man. -something is wrong with me or humanity, every one is born with this desire for God in our soul, at the same time we are born with an undeniable need for forgiveness. that desire for God or forgiveness may take the form of trying to do good to feel better or deny the existence of God to run from that reality. maybee after living such a good life some have even convinced themselves that forgivness is not needed. Something draws everyone to this Gospel of Grace so unique to Christianity or they are repelled by it, or probably both at once. they may not be able to explain it or have fancy terms for it if or when they come to believe it, but we have to believe that something real happens to even those who believe upon his name.

i have a first edition of "Spurgeon's Sermons". . . on the face page of the book is a picture of himself, signed "Yours Very Truly" C.H. Spurgeon. . Works of the Reverend C.H. Spurgeon, published by Robert Carter and Brothers, New York 1883

Its tan in colour, with decorative black embossing on the front cover and spine. . . . .very striking! the back is embossed without colour. . a negative image, kind of a sunburst at first glance, but actually a stylized cross within a circle.. . there are varying width embossed bands framing the cross.

I think i shall treasure this!!! My grandfather's parting gift to me. . (i received many of his books after he died). . among them another first edition. . "The Sun Also Rises". . along with many, many Salvation Army history books, some 'elements of style' books (he was a writer) and a plethora of Watchman Nee's stuff. .

I think i'll have a good read with this. . . i haven't started this one yet. . i seemed to gravitate to Nee and read all of those. Now its time for Spurgeon.

thanx for this post. . without it, that book would probably still be sitting in my book case.

these words are ringing in my ears.........we had a situation recently where dozens of young people were making professions of Christ and a few of us were worried about the reality of it and how much these folks really knew what they were getting into........spurgeons words just whack me off my seat and make me realise the seriousness of this
