FROM THE ROAD: KELSO/LONGVIEW, WA

Two gigs today. The first was playing a handful of songs at a church in Kelso decked out in the usual Fourth of July trimmings. I've grown up around this kind of thing but I don't think I'll ever feel comfortable seeing this much nation stuff in God's house. Something about it just feel wrong to me. But that's another post for another day I guess.

Chuck Lopez, the music minister at the church, let us use his office as a green room. He's got good toys in there. Thanks for letting me use your force, Chuck.

DSC01868Then it was off in the "tour bus" (this week's was a Ford Focus) to lunch with Danny from Way-FM and a few other new friends. Then, once stuffed with Oregon's version of Mexican food (man, these people need some real Tex-Mex in a big way) we drove a few blocks to the "Go Fourth" festival, thrown by numerous denominations in the cities of Longview and Kelso to celebrate and create unity among all Christians here.

DSC01875And did I mention already that folks in the Northwest are a little different from us down south. Yea, they are. We eat funnel cakes, cotton candy and other heart stopping indulgences at shindigs like this. Apparently people in these parts want to live though. What's that about?

Thanks to the cities of Kelso and Longview, Danny and everyone at WAY-FM. I had a great time. Next time though, I'm bringing you some real Mexican food.

Got thoughts? Discuss this SHLOG on my message-board

its cool that Americans love their country so much. . they can make the rest of the world seem positively unpatriotic!! Canadians are more reservedly patriotic, though intensely so really. We love our country. Enjoy your 4th of July. . ours was July 1.

its fun reading your shlog, its like being on the road too!

Shaun,
After living overseas for over 8 years, I'm glad to see such blantant patriotism in our churches. England is only "patriotic" when it comes to sports and royality. They don't display their flag for other occassions. In this era where here in America the only acceptable form of discrimination is against Christianity and all things Christian, I'm glad our churches are doing what they can to remind those who are attacking us that America is a CHRISTIAN nation, not Muslim, not Jewish, Hindu, Buddist, or any other. We are made up of all those faiths and many more and that's OK. We were afterall founded on freedom of religion. We were NOT, however founded on freedom FROM religion. So many have come to think that anytime there is something Christian in public, it's being forced upon them, etc. and must be irradicated like some large rodent! I thinks it's high time Christians started to really fight for stand up for our beliefs and worry less about being offending. Christ never once mentioned tollerance and acceptance. He said love your enemy. He never taught us to accept their sin or their attempts to waterdown, degrade or eliminate our faith. We have to fight for our Christian nation, or we will lose it.

You only have one life to live so why waste it with veggie food and grilled salmon. May the force be with you!

I guess thanks are in order...a friend took a picture of you and three teen age girls while at the go Fourth festival, one of the girls being my daughter. You're not going to like this next statement, but... I said "who is this Sahaun Groves guy anyway?" Well a co-worker said you are a famous Christian rock dude...being the skeptic I am, I said "uh huh..." she: "google him". Okay, so maybe a few people out there do know you...anyway, I'll let my daughter know not to delete the pic... thanks for taking the time to pose with them...have a great tour...faye

the nationalism in church is a weird issue...i grew up in it, accepted it as normal (without much introspection). When I took my first Ministry position I asked them what type of music they wanted to have for the 4th of July musical (which I've done since my youth) They gave me a weird look and said "we worship the Kingdom of Heaven , not America" Wow, I was speechless. I Had NEVER thought about that even after a bible college degree. But on the flip side I have seen a great community draw that touched hearts and changed lives while celebrating God and America?

Probably shows that God works amongst our tattered theology!
