Got the estimate on the website rebuild today. The new site will cost an ESTIMATED $622. You guys have already donated $379 of that. Wow!

Kat is building the new site PRO BONO - everything but the graphics. Kat's a SHLOG.COM reader I got to meet in person when I played Waco not long ago. We geeked out talking web stuff together and she's contributed lots of insightful comments here over the past several months - so she's one of us. She has a reason to make this site great: she reads it. All we need to pay for is the software itself and Kat will install and configure and tweak for nothing! Again, wow!

If there's anything you'd like to have on the new and improved shaungroves.com/shlog.com site speak now so we can get Kat crackin' on how to make it happen. If you know a great graphic designer who'd be interested in working with us on the redesign let us know that too.

I still don't have an estimate on the recording cost for a new live CD and what not so for now the donations goal is $622. I'll up that goal when I get my act together on figuring out the live recording costs.

Thanks for giving.

We're up to $446 this morning, 8:25 AM Central Time, Saturday June 3.

I haven't made a graphic to show progress yet! I'll do that on the plane this weekend and hopefully have something up by Monday.

Has Kat considered using open-source (free) software? What is she planning on using that costs so much?

I can't develop a website for you for less than that, but I can't think of software I'd install that would cost $600. I'd run the blog on WordPress or maybe everything you've talked about so far on Drupal.

I'm not saying that Kat's ripping you off at all. Just that there might be cheaper ways to do it, maybe.

dan da man,
Great thoughts. I just want to clarify that it isn't just one software system that we're installing. It's actually two along with add-on modules.

Remember that this isn't just a new blog, it's a multi-blog driven community with membership capabilities and an affiliate capable ecommerce system that can manage digital download sales.

I have considered a myriad of open-source software, but I've not found any that provide all of the features we need or the level of support that is necessary for a site that will be the foundation of Shaun's new ventures.

In addition, by offering my services pro bono, it allows the shlog community to invest in top notch systems that will simplify both Shaun's interaction with all features of the site as well as the shlog community's interaction with the site.

Thanks for being willing to ask questions and offer your thoughts. I hope I've clarified things a bit.

Awesome, Kat.

Just wanted to make sure that Shaun was getting his money's worth. And, of course, you're right.

Thanks for all your hard work and for giving your time so graciously.

dan da man,
No problem. I love it when people are willing to ask the tough questions to make sure things are done right.

Please feel free to ask questions anywhere along the process. I'm always open to learning new things.

Nice site, by the way. I can't wait to read through your "geek" category. I asked for and got an 80gig external harddrive for Mother's Day last year. I think that officially qualifies me as a geek. :-)
